Sunscreen Leads in Functional Cosmetics Reviews

In the first half of 2024, sunscreen was the most reviewed functional cosmetic product. According to data released by the Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety’s Evaluation Institute, there were a total of 572 reviews, a 9% increase from 524 reviews in the same period last year.

Among functional cosmetics, sunscreens led with 169 reviews, followed by hair dyes with 143 reviews, triple-function products (whitening, anti-wrinkle, and sunscreen) with 93 reviews, and hair loss relief products with 32 reviews.

Hair dye reviews saw a significant increase from 52 to 143, reflecting consumer demand for a variety of colors and enhanced convenience, which has spurred active development in the related industry.

Of the functional cosmetics reviewed in the first half, 425 were domestically produced (74.3%), down from 844 (89.5%) last year, while imported products increased to 147 (25.7%) from 99 (10.5%).

Seven new functional ingredients were reviewed, including three for anti-wrinkle improvement, one for hair loss relief, one for acne-prone skin relief, one for reducing the appearance of stretch marks, and one hair dye.

A representative from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said, “The statistical data on functional cosmetics reviews can serve as foundational data for cosmetics research and development. We plan to continue analyzing and publishing review trends regularly.”

Misleading Claims in Microneedle Skincare Products: 82 Cases Identified

Recently, microneedle skincare products have gained significant popularity, but Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has uncovered that over 80% of these products being sold online are making false or exaggerated claims. After reviewing 100 online posts, the MFDS found that 82 of them violated Korea’s cosmetics regulations, leading to requests for the posts to be blocked by the Korea Communications Standards Commission. The misleading advertisements primarily claimed that microneedles could penetrate deep into the skin layers or promised immediate pore reduction, both of which are not scientifically validated for general cosmetic products. Microneedles are a medical technology designed to deliver substances into the deeper layers of the skin, typically used in drugs and medical devices. However, in the cosmetics industry, these products generally do not have the same capabilities. Some companies falsely advertised their products as having effects similar t...
