Cosmetics without surfactants: Cosmax's Microbial emulsifier

Introduction

On August 22, Cosmax announced that they have developed the world's first microbial emulsification system that can make cosmetics and skincare formulas without using chemical surfactants.

"No surfactant" Why is this important?

All cosmetics use surfactants and they are essential to mix water-soluble and fat-soluble raw materials.

These are called emulsifiers in cosmetics production, and so far, all cosmetics have been making emulsifiers using chemical surfactants.

Cosmax announced that they have succeeded in replacing the emulsifier with EPI-7, a microorganism that inhabits human skin, which is expected to have a huge impact on the cosmetics industry.

How was "No surfactant" developed?

Cosmax started skin microbiome research in 2011, and in 2019, they succeeded in commercializing the anti-aging skin microbiome for the first time in the world.

Since then, they have continued to study the field of microorganisms, and after more than 11 years of research, they have confirmed that the strains found in human skin have the ability to break down neutral fat and make various functional lipids.

Cosmax signed a joint research contract with United Active for this strain, and after five years of joint research, they succeeded in developing and registering this "bio nano-emulsion production technology" as a patent.

Expectations and Directions in the Future

The industry is paying attention to the development in that it will be able to make pure natural cosmetics, which has been a long-cherished dream of the cosmetics industry.

The efficacy of natural cosmetics made without chemical surfactants and mechanical help is expected.

Cosmax and United Active have finally optimized the fermentation process, and if they pass the stability test, they will publish their result in the world journal early next year.
